Day 3 ⫸ Cherohala Skyway
23 miles ◈ scenic drive ◈ short hike ◈ overlooks
Today we decided to change it up with a new town, scenic drive and short hike. Our first stop in the morning was Bryson City. We arrived just as the sun was coming up and enjoyed breakfast at Mountain Perks. The staff there was lovely and extremely welcoming from the moment you walk in the door. HIGHLY RECOMMENEDED! After breakfast we continued our drive into the mountains, stopping at Cardinal Coffee, a ridiculously cute road-side coffeeshop (because what morning is complete without that 3rd cup of coffee ?).
Once we were all caffed-up, it was time to find the Cherohala Skyway, a 23 mile scenic drive through the autumn-colored mountains to the Tennessee border. This drive is a wonderful way to experience the mountains in the fall. The colors are bright, the overlooks are breathtaking and you can even enjoy a several short hikes along the way. We chose Huckleberry Knob Trail as our hike of the day. The trail was a beautiful 2 mile out-and-back with epic 360° views at Huckleberry Knob. The only downside for us was the 6 guys in their early 20’s camping at the knob. They were loud and kept throwing firecrackers in their campfire, completely obstructing the peaceful scenery. It’s seems like this trail is pretty popular, so maybe going early morning on a weekday would be better next time.
On our way back, we ended the day exploring Nantahala Outdoor Center and eating dinner by the river.
